Mathematics Education, Multiculturalism and Prejudice: which man is taken as the measure of all others?

This study examines different expressions of multiculturalism that are present in various sectors of society, including the schools. We point to power relations that exist in a multicultural space, the school environment in particular, and focus on the use of scientific research that supports discriminatory ideologies based on prejudice. Using the indigenous context as an example, we question the valorization of one type of rationality and mathematical knowledge in detriment to others, and illustrate the importance of conducting scientific research that reveals and values different ways of thinking and mathematizing. Finally, we emphasize the fact that the Afro-Brazilian struggle for recognition of the specificity and value of their knowledge, with African roots, has had weak impact thus far in mathematics education in Brazil.
