Students’ self-perception of their ability and perspective about physical education

Resumo: The literature emphasizes the importance in considering the student's thought in the planning and teaching development. The objective of this study was to characterize the personal perceptions of 6th, 7th and 8th grade students (n=123) that feel to have high and low ability perception in physical education classes. The data were collected through closed-questions questionnaire. The statistical treatment was accomplished through clusters analysis. The perceived competence, perception of academic involvement and perception of teachers' expectations were different among the students that had high and low ability perception. The results confirm the importance in considering students' psychological features in interpretation of their behaviour at classes and academic performance. The teachers should provide success opportunities to the students, so that, the competence feeling could be improved in the low ability perception students and be maintained in the high ability perception students.

O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar as percepções pessoais de 123 alunos da 6ª a 8ª série do ensino fundamental, de alta e baixa percepção de habilidade na disciplina de educação física. Os dados foram coletados através de questionários. O tratamento estatístico foi realizado através da análise de clusters. Os alunos de alta e baixa percepção de habilidade se distinguiram significativamente em relação à percepção de competência, percepção de envolvimento acadêmico e percepção de expectativas dos professores.Os resultados confirmam a importância de considerar os traços psicológicos dos alunos na interpretação do seu comportamento nas aulas e desempenho acadêmico.
