Resumo: The scientific literature based biomedical lawyer has the idea that physical inactivity could promote the occurrence of various diseases. However, it seems still uncertain understanding of what is "inactivity". The purpose of this study is to discuss the concept of a sedentary lifestyle and the possible consequences of speech that resembles exercise the medicalization. After a review of some scientific papers dealing with the issue, trying to categorize the use of the term. In addition, we have tried to undertake a review of the authors' arguments. We could see then that: a) the term "sedentary lifestyle" has been used in numerous ways, that can mean quite distinct phenomena b) the authors have, in their great majority, upheld a relationship, questionable, the causality between physical activity and health, and c) there is a strong moral appeal in speeches produced by scientists.

Contudo, parece ainda incerto o entendimento do que seja “sedentarismo”. Neste sentido, o objetivo do presente estudo é debater o conceito de sedentarismo e as possíveis conseqüências do discurso que assemelha o exercício físico à medicalização. Para tanto, após revisão alguns artigos científicos que tratam do tema, buscou-se categorizar o uso do termo. Além disto, procurou-se realizar uma análise das argumentações dos autores.
