Acute muscle fatigue: a brief review of the physiological systems and their possible relationships

Resumo: In many sports events the athlete’s success depends on the maintenance of repeated muscle contractions during a relatively long period. Despite extensive literature about fatigue, there still is little conclusive agreement about this physiological phenomenon. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to review the literature concerning the possible physiological events associated with acute muscle fatigue. Influences from the central nervous system, the cardiovascular system, as well as skeletal muscles may be factors affecting the development of fatigue. A new theoretical explanation for fatigue mechanisms is herein explained in order to reconcile conflicts found in the literature.

Apesar da extensa literatura sobre os mecanismos da fadiga muscular aguda, ainda é amplamente discutido qual o principal evento fisiológico que poderia explicar o surgimento desse fenômeno. Dessa forma, o presente artigo teve por objetivo realizar uma revisão da literatura sobre os possíveis mecanismos fisiológicos associados ao tema em questão. As principais evidências apontam de forma fragmentada para eventos que ocorrem pelo sistema nervoso central, cardiovascular ou do próprio aparato contrátil.
