Resumo: The purpose of our article is to seek, through a discussion about the creation, history and operation of a particular museum, the Historical and Pedagogical Museum of Ourinhos, to make a broader analysis of municipal museums. For such, we sought to contemplate the initial goals of these institutions, their relationship and exchange of ideas with the communities in which they are embedded, both in the past and in the present time, and the problems which these institutions are currently facing.
