Machado de Assis’short stories publishedin Jornal das Famílias: the ironic representation of conventions of the production linked on the periodical press

This paper aims to analyse the way the conventions of the literary production linked on the periodical press are developed in the short story “Astúcias do marido”, (Jornal das Famílias, October-November 1866). In this short story the narrator intends to demonstrate, ironically, how his story follows the literary patterns, as well as lightness and morality criterions and also a necessity of the systematic section, which are conventions established by the newspaper’s management. Therefore, by exposing the artificiality of the narrative construction and combining the alternative movements between adherence (apparent) and opposition by via irony to the journalistic production patterns and the audience’s preferences, the narrator proceeds and unusual narrative technique in the Brazilian literature: the narrative volubility.
