The purpose of this paper is to exploit the main traits and the transformations that occurred during the proccess uf urbanization of the city of Mariana, in Minas Gerais State, in the period from 1960 to 1990, which was influenced by some changes in order to accomodate the new coming population. We will concentrate in the polarization between the settled population and the new one, which may be faced as a characteristic of that city´s urban scenery during the proccess mentioned above. Some studies show that the native population, frightened by the increasing offer of workmanship from the coming groups began to stablish frontiers between them, what affected the political situation and also the division of territorial areas. Thus, such movement seems to have produced effects on the spatial organization of the city and, also, in the access of the native population to the cultural goods, what means that this proccess seems to have affected the evolution of aspects of citizenship.
