Sources for the study of neo-Pentecostalism in Brazil: the case of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God

Resumo: Neopentecostalism has been defined as a religious movement, which was denominationally termed in the 70s in Brazil and from the Classical Pentecostalism in the USA in the beginning of 20th century. For this research some main sources were assumed, such as neopentecostal literature, speeches from members and leaders, personal observations and TV and radio programmes. Methodologies and theories are based on the New Cultural History parameters, particularly the concepts of appropriation, cultural circulation, habitus, imaginary and long duration. This had happened because biblical reading has an important role about these actions in the Neopentecostalism in order to establish the collective behavior and configure a fertile cultural past. There is a cultural substrate from African beliefs and popular Catholicism religiosity because the magic of rites and symbolism, hence that is a re-significance syncretism from some Evangelical Traditions elements.

Para a pesquisa do tema proposto, adotam-se como principais fontes as literaturas neopentecostais, matérias jornalísticas da mídia impressa, depoimentos de líderes e fiéis, observações presenciais e programas veiculados pela mídia. Utilizam-se como referencial teórico-metodológico, parâmetros da Nova História Cultural, priorizando-se os conceitos de apropriação, circulação cultural, habitus, imaginário e longa duração. Da análise aqui empreendida, constata-se que a leitura da Bíblia exerce um papel preponderante nas práticas deste segmento religioso ao orientar o comportamento coletivo e configurar um fertilíssimo passado cultural.
