Resumo: Being within the scope of the history of environment, this article deals with aspects related to the devastation of the forest that originally covered a large part of land in the Paranapanema river valley, between 1890 and 1944. Many types of suits from the files of the Assis District Court House were used as a documented guiding line for analyzing the land, as these files carry a large number of documents that describe the landscape. These descriptions provided means to approach the deforestation subject.
