“Travel literature": views about Brazil from the records of foreign travelers

Resumo: The aim of this paper is to reflect upon aspects of education, civility, behaviour,everyday life and the daily habits of Brazilian life during the 19th century as portrayed in contemporary Travel Literature, documentation produced from the narratives of foreigners, who had been to Brazil and recorded their impressions using different media. The investigation intends to discuss how this travelogue gained notice in Europe, and how the travelers’ records became a documentary framework that constructed an overview of Brazil during this period, with some reservations. Thus the records examined in this study are considered a secondary source since they were produced, analyzed and published by researchers in this area, who helped to compose an overview expressed from the perspective of the foreign traveler.

A investigação pretendeu discutir o modo como a viagem passou a ser percebida na Europa a partir do século XV e como os relatos dos viajantes se transformaram num arcabouço documental que permite, feitas as devidas ressalvas, construir um olhar sobre o Brasil do período.
