Indexing policy in university libraries in the healthcare area

Indexing has variables that involve users, the organization, and the conceptual analysis and translation procedure itself, with the use of documentary languages and for that reason the indexing policy becomes an essential discussion for this activity, starting from the premise of standardizing the indexing process that occurs from the stages of subject analysis and translation of terms. The research aims to investigate the elements of indexing policy in university libraries in healthcare area of an integrated library system at Brazilian Federal University. The methodological path is characterized as exploratory with a case study based on the qualitative analysis of questionnaires applied with four catalogers from four sectoral libraries in the health area. In the results analysis, some elements of the indexing policy in common between the sectoral libraries have been identified, however, those elements have appeared without a standardization, reinforcing that there is no effective dialogue between these libraries. It is concluded that the absence of an indexing policy in the sectoral healthcare libraries cause a non-systematization of indexing procedures and the reflection on this activity for the representation of information, reinforcing the need to elaborate an indexing policy.
