The life and work of Brazilian sociologist Luiz de Aguiar Costa Pinto is arranged here in order to contrast the relations between sociological production and the institutionalization of sociology, in the historical context of post-war Southern America. Such context is characterized by high international associativism, specially under the United Nations institutional umbrella, focusing on the issues of social and economic development. New institutional initiatives took place in a context which was perceived as of social crisis, but also as of historical opportunity. The manner in which key actors relate to those conditions – embedded in an associative internationalism that aimed for answers toward the dilemmas of the post-colonial world – reveals us particular variables among general processes. An elucidative case is the professional life and work of Costa Pinto, especially in international forums as CLAPCS, ISA and UNESCO, all of them part of the UN framework.
