Resumo: The purpose of this essay is to comprehend the commercial network of yerba mate that was part of Joinville (SC) during the second half of the nineteenth century. There were intentions to the commercial network formation since the beginning of Dona Francisca Agricultural Colony, a German colonial nucleus that later originated Joinville. In the rising urban area landscape, the social dynamic was affected, considering the local economic and political elite of yerba mate. In this article we present an interdisciplinary investigation that discusses the city’s history and the role of communication communication ways interlaced with the economic history of yerba mate. The discourse analysis is used in the treatment of sources, that cover the period between 1851 and 1890. As documental sources, we have used the reports of the Colonization Society of Hamburg, the travelers’ reports, the province presidents’ reports and newspapers.

Hubo intenciones para la formación de esta red comercial desde el inicio de la Colonia Agrícola Doña Francisca, núcleo colonial alemán asentado en 1851 que luego originó Joinville. En la Colonia Agrícola Dona Francisca y en el naciente núcleo urbano de Joinville, la dinámica social se vio afectada, ya que se formó una élite económica y política local, construyendo la llamada oligarquía del mate. En este artículo presentamos una investigación interdisciplinar que analiza la historia de la ciudad, el papel de las vías de comunicación y su relación con la economía de la yerba mate. El análisis del discurso se utiliza en el tratamiento de las fuentes, que cubren el período comprendido entre 1851 y 1890. Como fuente documental, utilizamos los informes de la Sociedad Colonizadora de Hamburgo, los informes de los viajeros, los informes de los presidentes provinciales y los periódicos.O objetivo deste estudo é compreender a rede comercial ervateira que se integrou à Joinville (SC) durante a segunda metade do século XIX. Existiam intenções para a formação dessa rede comercial desde o início da Colônia Agrícola Dona Francisca, um núcleo colonial germânico que posteriormente originou Joinville. No nascente núcleo urbano da Colônia a dinâmica social foi afetada, na medida em que ocorreu a formação de uma elite local econômica e política ervateira. Neste artigo apresentamos uma pesquisa interdisciplinar que discute a história da cidade, o papel das vias de comunicação e as suas relações com a economia da erva-mate. A análise do discurso é empregada no tratamento das fontes, que abrangem o período entre 1851 e 1890.
