The “Fenômeno Brizola” in Rio Grande do Sul (1945-1958): the mastery of a political habitus and the conquest of the elector´ heart

Resumo: Throughout his political life, and especially during the brazilian democratic experience (1945-1964), Leonel de Moura Brizola was notable for his ability to reach the hearts of the electorate, through a clear, direct and understandable language for them. In this article, we sought to analyze the results and possible factors of Brizola's wide victory over his opponent, Walter Peracchi Barcellos, from the Democratic Front, classified at the time as the “Brizola Phenomenon”. The hypothesis suggested in this work is that the expressive vote obtained by the labor candidate is explained by the domain of a political habitus of the tribune, that is, the domain of both the codes and the languages necessary to build popularity among a growing and diversified electorate, a mark of the so-called brazilian democratic experience (1945-1964), as well as of the tools by which this popularity was built.

Neste artigo, buscou-se analisar os resultados e possíveis fatores da ampla vitória de Brizola sobre Walter Peracchi Barcellos, da Frente Democrática, nas eleições de 1958 no Rio Grande do Sul, classificada na época de “Fenômeno Brizola”.
