Favorable winds to contradictions: : an analysis of the imagery and discursive compositions of travestilities in the journal Lampião da Esquina - RJ (1978-1981)

This article aims to analyze in forty-one editions of the newspaper Lampião da Esquina – published between 1978 and 1981 – the imaginary and textual speeches that the newspaper reproduced about transvestites. The conflicts of the editorial have been analyzed, demonstrating the tensions in the different ways of composing the transvestites' image. The study of the representations and visualities elaborated by the editors about transvestites showed that certain publications and pictures in the journal's editions were published as a symbol of male power to assert virile masculinity. The analysis made it possible to reveal that throughout the publications the editors grouped multiple identities around the conception of homosexuals, producing and reaffirming a hierarchy.
