South Bahia’s Anonymous society of Auto Transportation – AVSB and the construction of the Ilhéus-Itabuna road (1922-1932)

This study analyses the organization and functioning of the South Bahia’s Anonymous Society of Auto Transportation – AVSB in portuguese – a company created with the purpose of building a highway that should connect Ilhéus to Itabuna, counties that are leaders in cocoa production in the state of Bahia. The AVSB was founded in 1922, the starting point of this research, and operated through subscriptions financed by its own members, with the goal of defray materials, labor and the rest of the construction costs. The final goal of this research is the year of 1932, when the AVSB became SULBA, a subsidiary company from Bahia’s Cocoa Institute – ICB in portuguese, ceasing to be an anonymous society. The AVSB has many allies in the regional media and the municipal government. By the direction of AVSB, the construction of the Ilhéus-Itabuna road coincided with the beginning of the road movement on Brazil, which directly influenced the South Bahia region, being the road transport presented as synonymous of a supposed progress.
