Environmental Thought and Legislation in Brazil (1896-2000)

This article analyzes the construction of environmental thought and legislation in Brazil from the end of the 19th century until the promulgation of Law 9,985 of 2000 that instituted the National System of Conservation Units (SNUC). The analysis was based on the assumptions of Environmental History as it focuses on the relationship between human beings and the environment. Texts by researchers who analyzed environmental thought and legislation were used, as well as the legislation itself. It was observed that the environmental degradation of the Atlantic Forest Biome due to the exploitation of natural resources in its historical occupation process resulted in the production of research and in the publication of different laws, mainly in the southeastern region of the country. Legal advances can also be seen in relation to the protection of the environment since the Federal Constitution of 1988.
