The Cultural Politics of the Secretaría de Educaci-ón Pública (SEP) and the “Educación Socialista” in Mexico in the 1930s

Resumo: Our goal is to analyze the main features of the cultural politic developed by the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) in Mexico from its creation to the radicalization of its proposals in the 1930’s. If, during the 1920’s, the SEP was concerned about the insertion of the peasant population and indigenous in the construction of a new nation and a new identity, in the 1930’s its educational politic radicalized in search of an immediate change of the socioeconomic reality of the country. This radicalization took place with the implantation of “educación socialista” in Mexico at the beginning of the government of Lázaro Cárdenas, in December 1934. In addition, we will try to reflect on the ideological dissemination made by SEP from the beginning of the 1930’s through the medium editorial, theater and cinema, which served to sustain and legitimize the radicalization of its proposals.

Se durante a década de 1920 a SEP esteve preocupada com a inserção da população camponesa e indígena na construção de uma nova nação e de uma nova identidade, na década de 1930 a sua política educacional se radicalizou em busca de uma mudança imediata da realidade socioeconômica do país. Tal radicalização se deu com a implantação da “educación socialista” no México no início do governo de Lázaro Cárdenas, em dezembro de 1934.
