This article discusses the fate of African origin and African rural workers in Brazil in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It starts with a survey of approaches to build a “portrait” of the rural world of work at the end of the Empire and the beginning of the Republic. Both social history and environmental history have questioned the absence of these individuals in works on the rural environment of the republican period, Afro-Brazilians would have left their slave quarters and history (RIOS, MATTOS, 2004). Therefore, it seeks to answer some questions, such as, who were the rural workers in that period? What type and size of properties did they work on and what were the working conditions? How were these African rural workers and of African origin the protagonists of an “Africanization” of the Brazilian rural environment? It also addresses the theme of the territories of the remaining quilombos, which are presented as windows of an Africanization of the rural environment.
