Resumo: ABSTRACT: This article resulted from the analysis of two colonial chronicles written by French missionaries involved in the French colonial project for Maranhão in the early years of the 17th century. This publication, in addition to referring to the French experience of colonization, contains information on the social and religious roles assumed by indigenous women and their interfaces with agricultural work, symbolic rituals and the political participation of the Tupinambá indigenous communities. In these chronicles, we can see signs of appreciation of indigenous women, mainly because she is the guardian of culture and knowledge of survival in these lands. Even if there was an asymmetry between genders, as women were educated since childhood to perform functions that ensured a central role in the economy, and in the whole set of values associated with them that express a representation of female identity.
