Resumo: Our theme is the relation between the native non-Inca elites in the Andes, the curacas, and the heterogenic sacrificial practice original from the Andes known as Capacocha. Based upon writings by friars Bartolomé de las Casas and Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda, we shall discuss how ecclesiastic sectors reacted before the newly arrived accounts from the New World. Then, we shall see how the curacas and the capacocha are represented in the chronicles by Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. Lastly, we shall analyze archeological evidence that sheds light upon the native elites and the sacrificial rites, followed by an account of how the Capacocha appears in a legal document from the sixteenth century. With that in mind, we aim to strengthen the thesis that capacocha was one of the most important means of social climbing of which  curacas could dispose.
