Resumo: The article aims to briefly recover the political-scientific debate that led to the creation of the Brazilian Forest Code, published in 1934, the first Federal Decree that instituted the forests protection in Brazil. It focuses on the participation of some of the leading intellectuals, politicians and scientists of the time who both propagated preservationist and conservationist ideas of nature, and promoted a broad debate on the forestry issue, especially linked to the construction of the Brazilian nation. It is also partially examined the document itself that resulted notably from this movement, the Brazilian Forest Code, seeking to understand to what extent the nationalist ideal constituted it, as well as the type of forest protection it has set.
