This article was written in the historiographical perspective that understands humor, in one of its possible manifestations, as a reaction to social structure. We sought to represent the creation of Vitorino Carneiro da Cunha, a character of José Lins do Rego, as an ironic provocation to general frameworks identified in literary criticism of his novel. The oligarchic tradition was lived, represented and mocked by José Lins do Rego and it still did not limit him in speaking, in his career as a novelist, only about that. In order to situate the place of speech of José Lins do Rego, the project of northeastern regionalism was presented as a manifestation of modernism emancipated from the one that started in São Paulo, with the Week of Modern Art.
