Resumo: This paper adresses the main issues that the FUNDEF tried to answer and analyses if the criticism that it produced when was approved were right or not if we see the situation some years later. Finalizes with an analysis of the main impacts regarding the division of responsibilities between state and municipalities in the State of São Paulo. Ends with cosiderations on FUNDEB alternative, nowadays in debate in Brazil.

Ends with cosiderations on FUNDEB alternative, nowadays in debate in Brazil.O presente artigo recupera os principais problemas que se procurou enfrentar com a formulação inicial do Fundo para a manutenção e o desenvolvimento do Ensino Fundamental e de valorização do magistério (Fundef) e analisa se as críticas formuladas por ocasião de sua aprovação se mostraram procedentes decorridos alguns anos de sua implantação. Analisa seus impactos na reorganização da distribuição de responsabilidades no Estado de S.
