Resumo: The following article is divided into three parts and a conclusion. Part I seeks to recount the historical facts that preceded the convening of the Constituent Assembly which led to the 1988 Constitution. Part II analyzes the changes brought about by the new Political Charter, especially regarding the three branches of government, as well as the transformations of Brazilian constitutional theory over the period. Part III evaluates the post-1988 governments, the main amendments to the Constitution, and some of the critical moments experienced during its thirty-five years in force. The Conclusion of the text presents an agenda for Brazil, encompassing various issues, from the fight against poverty to prioritizing basic education, passing through fostering economic growth and investing in science and technology. Despite some scares and frustrations, there are good reasons to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the 1988 Constitution and the consolidation of constitutional democracy in Brazil. O artigo que se segue está dividido em três partes e uma conclusão. Na Parte I, procura-se resgatar os fatos históricos que antecederam a convocação da Assembleia Constituinte que resultou na Constituição de 1988. A Parte II analisa as mudanças trazidas pela nova Carta Política, especialmente em relação aos Poderes da República, bem como as transformações da teoria constitucional brasileira ao longo do período. A Parte III avalia os sucessivos governos pós-1988, as principais emendas feitas à Constituição e alguns dos momentos críticos atravessados nesses trinta e cinco anos de vigência. Ao final, a Conclusão do texto procura apresentar uma agenda para o Brasil, que inclui itens que vão do combate à pobreza até a prioridade máxima para a educação básica, passando pela volta ao crescimento econômico e o investimento em ciência e tecnologia. Apesar de alguns sustos e frustrações, há boas razões para celebrar os 35 anos da Constituição de 1988 e a consolidação da democracia constitucional brasileira.
