From modernization to authority: the brazilian mainstream press, between the dictatorship and democracy – Folha and O Globo, 1964-2014

Resumo: This article problematizes the institutionalization of the so-called “mainstream press” in Brazil, conceived as a “fourth power,” between the dictatorship and democracy. The analysis will be based on the newspapers Folha de S. Paulo and O Globo, two companies that, from the authoritarian modernization they underwent during the dictatorship, to their position as incisive agents in the process of redemocratization, have gone through processes often ambiguous and tortuous. To this end, the text intends to identify, at some specific moments in the history of these newspapers, characteristics that allow us to configure the search for an authority among the actors in the foreground of a scene of political representation, which is crucial to understanding how newspapers define and legitimize their identities in and over time.

El análisis será pautado en los periódicos Folha de S. Paulo y O Globo, dos empresas que, de la modernización autoritaria que sufrieron durante la dictadura, a su postura como agentes incisivos en el proceso de redemocratización, caminaron por procesos muchas veces ambiguos y tortuosos. Para ello el texto pretende identificar, en algunos momentos específicos en la historia de los periódicos, características que nos permitan configurar la búsqueda de una autoridad de estos actores frente a la escena de representación política, cruciales para percibir cómo los periódicos procuraron definir y legitimar sus identidades en, con y por el tiempo. A proposta deste artigo é problematizar o processo de institucionalização da chamada grande imprensa no Brasil, pensada sob o viés de um outro “quarto poder”, entre a ditadura e a democracia. A análise será pautada nos jornais Folha de S. Paulo e O Globo, duas empresas que, da modernização autoritária que sofreram durante a ditadura à sua postura como agentes incisivos no processo de redemocratização, caminharam por processos muitas vezes ambíguos e tortuosos.
