Annotated translation of the song “Zumbi”, by Jorge Ben Jor, into Libras: an affective-translational manifest for the Black Awareness Day

Resumo: In this article, I describe the translation process from Portuguese into Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) of the song Zumbi, composed and recorded by Jorge Ben Jor in 1974 and re-recorded by Ellen Oléria in 2013. The social and intersubjective backdrop for this translation is my relationship, as an Afro-indigenous man, with my own ancestry and, as a sign language translator and interpreter, with the lack of access by the deaf community, for educational and linguistic reasons, to Afro-Brazilian culture and, for sensory and cultural aspects, to massive Brazilian popular music. This double identity dimension is intertwined with the possibility of publicizing anti-racist demonstrations and the defense of ethnic-racial guidelines on Black Awareness Day on widely accessible platforms such as social networks. The annotated translation presented here is theoretically based on the Bakhtinian conception of language, which understands that any semiosis is crossed and constituted by the social, historical, ideological, and alteritarian dimension; the Camposian concept of transcreation, which assumes that the complexity of a text expands the translator's transcreative possibilities; and the concept of intermodality present in Sign Language Translation and Interpretation Studies (ETILS), which observes the impossibility of splitting text and body in gesture-visual languages. I describe the translation process of the song pointing out the linguistic and narrative elements of the song and the Libras version, and highlighting the visual references that supported the linguistic-discursive choices in the target text.

El trasfondo social e intersubjetivo de esta traducción es mi relación, como hombre afroindígena, con mi propia ascendencia y, como traductor e intérprete de lengua de signos, con la falta de acceso de la comunidad sorda, por razones educativas y lingüísticas, a la cultura afrobrasileña y, por razones sensoriales y culturales, a la música popular brasileña masiva. Esta doble dimensión de la identidad se entrelaza en la posibilidad de dar a conocer manifestaciones antirracistas y defensa de agendas étnico-raciales en el Día de la Conciencia Negra en plataformas ampliamente accesibles como las redes sociales. La traducción comentada aquí presentada se basa teóricamente en la concepción bajtiniana del lenguaje, que entiende que cualquier semiosis se cruza, constituye y sostiene en la alteridad y en las dimensiones sociales, históricas e ideológicas, el concepto campoiano de transcreación, que asume que la complejidad de un texto amplía las posibilidades transcreativas del traductor y el concepto de intermodalidad presente en los Estudios de Traducción e Interpretación de la Lengua de Signos (ETILS), que observa la imposibilidad de dividir entre texto y cuerpo en lenguajes de modalidad gesto-visual. Describo el proceso de traducción de la canción apuntando a los elementos lingüísticos y narrativos de la canción y la versión en Libras evidenciando las referencias visuales que apoyaron las elecciones lingüístico-discursivas en el texto de destino.Neste artigo descrevo o processo de tradução da canção Zumbi, composta e gravada por Jorge Ben Jor em 1974 e regravada por Ellen Oléria em 2013, para a língua brasileira de sinais (Libras). O pano de fundo social e intersubjetivo para essa tradução é a minha relação, como homem afro-indígena, com a minha própria ancestralidade e, como tradutor e intérprete de língua de sinais, com a falta de acesso da comunidade surda, por questões educacionais e linguísticas, à cultura afro-brasileira e, por questões sensoriais e culturais, às músicas populares brasileiras massivas. Essa dupla dimensão identitária se imbrica na possibilidade de publicizar manifestações antirracistas e de defesa de pautas étnico-raciais no Dia da Consciência Negra em plataformas de amplo acesso como as das redes sociais. A tradução comentada aqui apresentada fundamenta-se, teoricamente, na concepção bakhtiniana de linguagem, que entende que qualquer semiose é atravessada, constituída e sustentada na alteridade e nas dimensões social, histórica e ideológica, o conceito camposiano de transcriação, que assume que a complexidade de um texto amplia as possibilidades transcriativas do tradutor e o conceito de intermodalidade presente nos Estudos da Tradução e da Interpretação da Língua de Sinais (ETILS), que observa a impossibilidade de cisão entre texto e corpo em línguas de modalidade gesto-visual.
