Ordinary of the senses and resistance in grief/dispute in the newspaper Boca de Rua

The process of elaborating and circulating the grief is embodied in the words and images displayed in the 76th edition of the newspaper called Boca de Rua (Porto Alegre/RS), the only Brazilian newspaper produced by homeless people. The mid-2020 edition has, on its cover, the image of Leandro Corrêa, one of the members of Boca, who, according to the newspaper, was “killed by the system”. With Leandro’s leading role in the newspaper and with the disclosure of his death – along with his life – the newspaper formulates the grief as a political and social gesture, materializing resistance through the ordinary of the senses. Through the analysis of the cover story, we can observe material elements that point to this gesture of resistance, breaking with the ‘framework’ about who can and should be the object of grief in our social formation. The possible drifts between death and murder, between news and complaint, between news and tribute allow the interpretation of the cover text as a way of elaborating and circulating the grief, inseparable from a symbolic dispute. The Materialist Discourse Analysis operates theoretically and analytically in the process of description and interpretation of the corpus, bringing fundamental contributions to the discussion about grief/dispute from the dominated position.
