Temporal Adjuncts from a Cartographic Syntax and Event Semantics perspective

Resumo: The study of adverbial phrases is a productive field for research developments in the syntax and the semantics of natural languages. Although the Brazilian Portuguese temporal adjuncts “em x tempo” (“in x time”) and “por x tempo” (“for x time”) are relatively well described in the literature, they still need an in-depth study when one tries to understand the possible interpretations of the sentences where they are present. Having that in mind, the main goal of this paper is to develop a Cartographic and Event Semantics analysis able to capture the contribution of the temporal adjunct—more specifically “em x tempo” (“in x time”)—in Brazilian Portuguese sentences. Besides that, it also aims at arguing in favor of a hypothesis by which the features of temporal adjuncts be valued in more than one position in the universal hierarchy.
