Resumo: This paper compares adjectival modification structures in Brazilian Portuguese, English, and Hebrew, to identify their properties of interpretation and syntactic variation for these three languages. The hypothesis is that structures of the type (gerund)/A/Adv+de+A/N allow for an intensity reading, expressed by the element preceding the preposition by consequence of the categorization of a prepositional structure that selects two roots. The variation among the three languages occurs from the (non-)categorization of the root in the complement position, and from the adjunction of such root to the specifier position, yielding an order inversion with a rightward head, just like English N+N compounds. The empirical evidence for the proposal is based on the behaviors of modifiers, intervention of other modifying elements between adjectival items and the cases of semantic intensity readings.

La hipótesis es que las estructuras de tipo (gerundio)/A/Adv+de+A/N permiten una lectura de intensidad, expresada en el elemento anterior a la preposición, como consecuencia de la categorización de una estructura preposicional que selecciona dos raíces. La variación entre los tres idiomas se debe a la (no)categorización de la raíz en la posición del complemento, y en el complemento de la raíz en la posición del complemento a la posición del especificador, generando una inversión de orden con núcleo a la derecha, como en los compuestos N+N del inglés. La evidencia empírica para la propuesta se basa en los comportamientos de modificación, intervención de otros modificadores entre los elementos adjetivales y los casos de interpretación semántica de la intensidad.Este artigo compara estruturas de modificação adjetival em português brasileiro, inglês e hebraico, numa tentativa de identificar suas propriedades de interpretação e variação sintática nas três línguas. A hipótese é que estruturas do tipo (gerúndio)/A/Adv+de+A/N permitem uma leitura de intensidade, expressa no elemento que precede a preposição, por consequência da categorização de uma estrutura preposicional que seleciona duas raízes. A variação entre as três línguas se dá pela (não-)categorização da raiz na posição de complemento, e na adjunção da raiz na posição de complemento à posição de especificador, gerando uma inversão de ordem com núcleo à direita, como nos compostos N+N do inglês.
