Grammatical norms and linguistic analysis: the place of grammaticality judgments in the Portuguese language classroom

Resumo: | This paper departs from Tescari Neto and Souza de Paula’s (2021) tenet that grammar teaching in Basic Education features two main fronts: the teaching of (and reflection on) grammatical norms and what is ordinarily referred to as “linguistic analysis”. Our main goal is to discuss the place of grammaticality judgments (methodology employed by generative linguistics) this time in grammar teaching, in Basic Education, when addressing issues on these two fronts. In view of the recommendation by the National Curricular Parameters (Brasil, 1998, 2000) and the National Common Curricular Base (Brasil, 2018) that linguistic analysis activities be articulately developed with activities of reading and textual production, we firstly discuss—from the perspective of text genres continuum (Marcuschi, 2004) and that of stylistic monitoring continuum (Bertoni-Ricardo, 2003)—the place of standard and grammatical norms (in the sense of Faraco, 2008) in Portuguese language teaching. Once that discussion is done, we argue, in the sequence, in favour of a grammar teaching methodology which takes advantage of grammaticality judgments both in the context of the teaching of standard norms—by a comparison of structures from student’s internalised grammar (those to be judged) with structures from the norm—and in the context of linguistic analysis. |

Siguiendo los pasos de Tescari Neto y Souza de Paula (2021), el trabajo reconoce que la enseñanza de la gramática en la Educación Básica involucra dos frentes principales: la enseñanza (y la reflexión) sobre las normas gramaticales y el análisis lingüístico. Nuestro objetivo es discutir el lugar de los juicios de gramaticalidad (metodología empleada por la lingüística generativa) en la enseñanza de la gramática en la Educación Básica, al abordar cuestiones desde estos dos frentes. A la luz de la recomendación de los PCN (Brasil, 1998, 2000) y del BNCC (Brasil, 2018) de que las actividades de análisis lingüístico se desarrollen de manera articulada con las de lectura y producción textual, problematizamos, en primer lugar, desde la perspectiva de los géneros textuales continuos (Marcuschi, 2004) y el seguimiento estilístico (Bertoni-Ricardo, 2003), el lugar de las normas estándar y gramaticales (en el sentido de Faraco, 2008) en la enseñanza de la lengua portuguesa para luego argumentar a favor de una metodología de enseñanza de la gramática que valore los juicios de gramaticalidad tanto en la enseñanza de la norma estándar – a través de una comparación de las estructuras de la gramática interiorizada del estudiante (estructuras que serán juzgadas) con las estructuras de la norma – como en el análisis lingüístico.Na esteira de Tescari Neto e Souza de Paula (2021), o trabalho reconhece que o ensino de gramática, na Educação Básica, envolve duas frentes principais: o ensino (e reflexão) sobre as normas gramaticais e a análise linguística. Nosso objetivo é discutir o lugar dos julgamentos de gramaticalidade (metodologia empregada pela linguística gerativa) no ensino de gramática, na Educação Básica, quando se abordam questões dessas duas frentes. Em vista da recomendação dos PCNs (Brasil, 1998, 2000) e da BNCC (Brasil, 2018) de que as atividades de análise linguística sejam desenvolvidas de maneira articulada com as de leitura e produção textual, problematizamos, primeiramente, na perspectiva dos continua dos gêneros textuais (Marcuschi, 2004) e de monitoração estilística (Bertoni-Ricardo, 2003), o lugar das normas padrão e gramatical (no sentido de Faraco, 2008) no ensino de língua portuguesa para, na sequência, argumentar em favor de uma metodologia de ensino de gramática que valorize os julgamentos de gramaticalidade tanto no ensino da norma-padrão — através de uma comparação de estruturas da gramática internalizada do aluno (estruturas essas que serão julgadas) com estruturas da norma — quanto na análise linguística.
