Resumo: In the year of 1862, it was inaugurated the equestrian statue of D. Pedro I, in Rio de Janeiro, in the square that afterwards would be named Tiradentes Square. This article, based on the studies of discourse, history and memory, aims to analyze the monument to the Emperor, considering the production conditions that inscribe that monument as a reference point and, at the same time, as a silent point (FEDATTO, 2011) in the National history. In a dispute for the territoriality memory, by building a monument it is chosen the image of the national hero that must be, since then, remembered, celebrate, commemorated; in doing so, the dissonant discourses that could affect this memory are erased. In order to think about the meaning effects in tension, we are to confront the institutional memory, linked to the statue, to the way Dom Pedro is depicted in verbal materialitiy, in the novels O Chalaça (1994), by José Roberto Torero, and As maluquices do Imperador (2008), by Paulo Setúbal. As theoretical background, we refer to Pêcheux (2008, 1999), Orlandi (2003, 2008), Fedatto (2011) and Robin (2016).
