In search of the stork: “seekers”, “instafriends” and possible activisms in social networks

Resumo: People who are trying to have children have accessed virtual networks and identified themselves in the "seeker"[tentante] category. This movement is part of the activation of social networks in the pursuit for information. In this search, the "seekers" are breaching the rule of silence that permeates infertility and the use of assisted reproduction. Such practices were often managed by taboos, secrecy and inserted in the sphere of intimacy. In this article we propose to reflect on how the creation of groups and channels of “seekers” in social networks can be seen sometimes as a forum for obtaining specialized information, and sometimes as a practice of virtual activism aimed at demystifying and eliminating taboos related to infertility. However, the centrality of women as protagonists of these channels and posts seems to maintain one of these taboos: women's blame and accountability for infertility. To understand this complex universe, we will analyze Instagram exchanges and publications from the profile of two seekers. We'll analyze how posts agency practices and impact on / offline universe. Likes, emojis and “instafriends” allow us a key to understanding how technology, rather than mediating relationships, builds them.

Esse movimento se insere na ativação de redes sociais na busca por informações. Há na busca de redes sociais por “tentantes” uma quebra da regra de silêncio que permeia a infertilidade e o uso de reprodução assistida. Tais práticas foram, frequentemente, agenciadas por tabus, segredo e inseridas na esfera da intimidade. Nesse artigo nos propomos a refletir sobre como a criação de grupos e canais de tentantes em redes sociais pode ser vista ora como um fórum de busca de informações especializadas, ora como uma prática de ativismo virtual visando através de redes de biossocialidade desmistificar e eliminar os preconceitos relacionados à infertilidade. No entanto, a centralidade de mulheres como protagonistas desses canais e postagens parece manter um desses tabus: a culpabilização e a responsabilização das mulheres pela infertilidade. Para compreendermos esse complexo universo, analisaremos as trocas e as publicações no Instagram a partir do perfil de duas tentantes. Nossa aproximação com essas publicações problematiza o modo como as postagens agenciam práticas e têm impacto no universo on/offline. “Curtidas”, emojis e “intamigas” nos permitem uma chave para compreender como a tecnologia mais do que mediar relações, as constrói.Pessoas que estão tentando ter filhos têm acessado redes virtuais e se identificando através da categoria “tentante”.
