Resumo: Starting from the political and scientific proposals that guided the institutional paths of the first Brazilian republic, two interrelated issues were projected in this research: to rescue the basic ideas related to education and instruction of Brazilian women, who became institutionalized in Rio de Janeiro; and to understand the different degrees of adherence of this pedagogical ideology to the normative, hygienic and eugenic formulations that have shaped the hegemonic discourse in the period.
