Resumo: In this text we analyze the implantation of the military prisons on the banks of the Araguaia River through the Reports of the Presidency of the Goiás Province dated from the second half of the XIX century. We sought to understand how the construction of the Santa Leopoldina prison influenced the settlement along the Araguaia river area, especially contributing to the emergence of the Aruanã city.
