Railroad and work: the case of railway heritage in São Paulo Estate

Resumo: This article presents the process of unification and privatization of the paulista railways, located from the setup of working relationships established in the 1970s. Through the reporting of an old railman it is possible to understand the reasons of railway decay, which go beyond merely road competition. If inthe past the railroads represented progress and were major employers of workers, today it represents abandonment. As well as terraced workshops, stations and flats workers, railway heritage is linked to the history of work on the railroad. Privatization removed elements which enclosed a copy of the identity.

Por meio do relato de um antigo ferroviário é possível compreender as razões da decadência ferroviária, que vão além da mera concorrência rodoviária. Se no passado as ferrovias significavam progresso e eram grandes empregadoras de trabalhadores, hoje representam abandono. Assim como prédios de oficinas, estações, moradias operárias, o sentido do patrimônio ferroviário está ligado à história do trabalho na ferrovia.
