Modern architecture in Belem [state of Para, Brazil] as an object and document of research: from invisibility to recognition

This paper shows the partial results of the ongoing research regarding the transformations in the architectural culture in the city of Belem [state of Para, Brazil] in its modern phase (1940-1980). The article is structured in three sections: the first refers to the theoretical and methodological procedures adopted for the analysis of the buildings; the second, deals with the professional field in which engineers and architects produced some of the buildings presented in this paper, with a brief analysis of the processes of transformation in their uses and in their materiality; the third part discusses these buildings considering their disappearances, invisibilities, the urgency of protection and construction of the historical memory of these buildings, understanding them within a socioeconomic and cultural structure, often adverse to the logic of architectural valuation and safeguarding. The paths adopted to record, analyze, and disseminate this architecture are highlighted, in search of its recognition as a source of memory and the history of Belem [state of Para, Brazil].
