Mesa Brasil SESC Program – Social Service of Commerce: participation of donated foods in Sergipe assisted institutions

Resumo: The present study aimed to evaluate the participation of food donations made by the Mesa Brasil SESC program in meeting the nutritional recommendations of children and adolescents of philanthropic institutions assisted by the program, as well as their importance in relation to access to adequate and healthy food. A survey of all foods and their respective amounts donated by the Mesa Brasil of six institutions during the period of November 2016 was carried out, and the daily nutritional needs were estimated based on the recommendations according to the age group and sex of the attended public. It was observed that for two institutions, all the donated foods were from the in natura group and for other two, a great part was food from this group or minimally processed. The nutrient that obtained the highest proportion of care for all institutions was vitamin C, corroborating the observation of predominance in donations of in natura foods. It was concluded, there fore, that the Mesa Brazil contributed positively to the access to adequate and healthy food in most of the researched institutions, since the majority of the donated foods were in natura, emphasizing the objective of the program to be only of additional character.

Todos los alimentos y sus respectivas cantidades donadas a seis instituciones en el período de noviembre de 2016 fueron levantados y clasificados de acuerdo con la extensión y grado de procesamiento. Se estimaron las necesidades diarias de energía y nutrientes con base en las recomendaciones nutricionales de acuerdo con el grupo de edad y el sexo del público atendido. Se observó que para dos instituciones, todos los alimentos donados eran del grupo in natura y para otras dos, gran parte era de alimentos de este grupo o minimamente procesados. El nutriente que obtuvo mayor proporción de atención para todas las instituciones fue la vitamina C, corroborando predominante en las donaciones de alimentos in natura. Se concluye, por lo tanto, que el MESA Brasil contribuyó positivamente para el acceso a la alimentación adecuada y sana en la mayoría de las instituciones investigadas, una vez que la mayoría de los alimentos donados era in natura, resaltando el objetivo del programa de ser tan sólo de carácter complementario .O presente estudo objetivou avaliar a participação das doações de alimentos realizadas pelo Programa Mesa Brasil SESC (Serviço Social do Comércio) no atendimento às recomendações nutricionais de crianças e adolescentes de instituições filantrópicas por ele assistidas, assim como sua importância em relação ao acesso à alimentação adequada e saudável. Todos os alimentos e as respectivas quantidades doadas para seis instituições no período de novembro de 2016 foram levantados e classificados de acordo com a extensão e grau de processamento. Estimaram-se as necessidades diárias de energia e nutrientes com base nas recomendações nutricionais de acordo com faixa etária e sexo do público atendido. Observou-se que para duas instituições, todos os alimentos doados eram do grupo in natura e para outras duas, grande parte era de alimentos deste grupo ou minimamente processados. O nutriente que obteve maior proporção de atendimento para todas as instituições foi a vitamina C, corroborando predominância nas doações de alimentos in natura.
