Resumo: The notion of supervenience has been much discussed recently and employed in many different areas of philosophy. Supervenience is a relation between sets of properties, and its major attraction is that it seems to provide the only way of formulating a stable form of nonreductive materialism. In this paper the various different versions of supervenience that have been proposed are distinguished (weak versus strong, local versus global, and ontological versus adscriptive). We conclude by examining the arguments for taking the notion of supervenience seriously and trying to make it precise.
