Resumo: Studies indicate that green roofs can improve thermal insulation and mitigate urban flooding. However, according to international studies, it could be enhanced using intensive covers with a thicker substrate cover. Considering the occurrence of floods in cities like Curitiba, Paraná, which also occur in other Brazilian climatic environments, we understand the need to create local data related to the topic since no national studies were found. This research aims to evaluate the effect that the increase of the substrate layer can have on the performance of green roofs concerning the thermal, hydrological behaviour and vegetation cover index in the city of Curitiba, Paraná. An experiment was carried out with six green roof prototypes, three intensive and three extensive. The monitoring took place over eight months, recording 21 precipitation events, three temperature measurement events and evaluation of the vegetation cover index using photographs analyzed with the ImageJ® software. We may conclude through the data gathered that, for the climatic conditions of the place, it is possible to increase runoff retention by up to 13%, to reduce the lower surface temperature by up to 4ºC, and increase the vegetation cover index by 17% on intensive green roofs.
