Resumo: This paper investigates the effects of vertical densification in the urban microclimate, to evaluate possible impacts of urban planning decisions on the environmental quality of cities. The research method consisted of a comparative analysis carried out through computer simulations (using ENVI-met software) to evaluate the impact on temperature and air velocity on thermal comfort conditions in three different scenarios. The first scenario represented the existing occupation patterns, considering a fraction of the Guaxuma neighborhood, the Gurgury settlement, located in Maceio city, Brazil, where an accelerated process of verticalization is in course due to the process of real estate valuation of the region.  The second and third scenarios represent the case where buildings with 10 and 20 floors were used, respectively. Results of computational simulations showed that the verticalization in the studied area had a significant impact on the microclimate, mainly regarding the performance of the natural ventilation. The difference between the model with 10 and that with 20 floors was relevant, reaching 1.21m/s in air velocity between the two scenarios. The results suggest that in the Guaxuma neighborhood, the effect of verticalization, as promoted by the new code of buildings, cause changes in the wind dynamics and that the 20-floor scenario presented the best performance to promote thermal comfort in the area.
