A historical-cultural approach to algebra teaching: the Mathematics Club as a Learning Space

Resumo: The essential paper of algebra teaching in the children’s development is irrefutable. In line withthat, this work discusses the algebraic learning in a learning space: the Mathematics Club. From the historicalcultural approach and the Activity Theory, the learning spaces are understood, as a place where individualsaccomplish specific learning goals guided by intentional action for who teaches. A major finding of this studyis that spaces such as the Mathematics Club are places capable to propitiate a significant learning activity inthe field of mathematical knowledge. This work results of a didactic experiment with children at the“Application School” from College of Education at Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil.

Com base nesta constatação, este trabalho discute a aprendizagem algébrica em um espaço de aprendizagem: o Clube de Matemática. Tendo como pressupostos a abordagem histórico-cultural e a Teoria da Atividade, os espaços de aprendizagem são entendidos, aqui, como lugar da realização da aprendizagem dos sujeitos orientados pela ação intencional de quem ensina. Os resultados deste trabalho indicam, por meio de um experimento didático desenvolvido com crianças do ensino fundamental da Escola de Aplicação da Faculdade de Educação da Universidade de São Paulo, que espaços como o Clube de Matemática constituem-se em lugares capazes de propiciar uma atividade de aprendizagem significativa dos conhecimentos matemáticos.
