Division and rational numbers: research review and analysis

Resumo: Official reports in Brazil reveal poor school performance in tasks involving division andrational numbers. We analyse 65 such studies, published between 1999 and 2010. Those regardingproblem solving are traditional studies with interviews about strategies, and the predominantinterventions involve control and experimental groups with pre and post tests. Both refer to conceptualfields (Vergnaud, 1990), to records of semiotic representation (Duval,1993) and to the sub-constructs ofrational numbers (Kieren, 1988). They agree on the importance of understanding the logic of thedecimal number system in order to grasp the logic of the division algorithm and rational numbers, onthe classroom predominance of exposition and rules to the detriment of concepts, and on theimportance of the teacher. It is proposed a model based on the analysis of cognitive regulations,including an analysis of the communicative processes, and taking into account the DevelopmentalPsychology of both the teacher and the student.

São analisados 65 estudos sobre o assunto, publicados entre 1999 e 2010. Os estudos sobre resolução de problemas inserem-se nos estudos tradicionais com entrevistas sobre as estratégias; nas intervenções, predominam o grupo controle e experimental, com pré e pós-testes. Ambos se referem aos campos conceituais, aos registros de representação semiótica e aos subconstrutos dos números racionais. Convergem na importância da compreensão da lógica do sistema numérico decimal para a compreensão da lógica do algoritmo da divisão e dos racionais; no predomínio, em sala de aula, da exposição e de regras, em detrimento do conceito; na importância do professor.
