Resumo: A great number of people consider mathematics as a knowledge thatexists in nature, or inside the Creator’s mind. The origin of this belief lies in thepitagorian and platonic cosmogonies, which explain the genesis of the world andthe human beings from a mathematical foundation as a way to escape frommyths. Nowadays, myths are understood as man’s discourse about the problemsthat disturb him, and mathematical philosophy does not accept the idea thatmathematics is not a human creation. It is possible, thus, to study the relationsbetween mathematics and myths just from the point that should be the rupturebetween logic and fantasy; that is, the pitagorian and platonic cosmologies. Finally, to assure the close relationship between mathematics and myths, thepresence of mathematics is shown in myth creation among Xavante Indians.
