Resumo: This article analyses the main characteristics of the United Kingdom protection system and its effect on the labour market. It was the first country to experience the perverse effects of unregulated capitalism. After the World War II, the Welfare State advanced in meeting basic social needs. From the 1970, the social protection system began to recede. This setback reached its peak after 2008, when the country was hit by a financial crisis (and a migration crisis) and began preparations for the exit of the European regional integration project. The analysis showed that austerity in economic policy and the weakening of social policy (and the weaker articulation between such policies) after 2008 had undesrable consequences. Rising employment and falling unemployment have been accompanied by deteriorating working conditions, and rising precarious jobs (with low pay and lower guarantees).

Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el Estado de bienestar avanzó en la satisfacción de las necesidades sociales básicas. A partir de la década de 1970, el sistema de protección social comenzó a retroceder. Este revés alcanzó su punto máximo después de 2008, cuando el país se vio afectado por una crisis financiera (y una crisis migratoria) y comenzó los preparativos para la salida del proyecto de integración regional europea. El análisis mostró que la austeridad en la política económica y el debilitamiento de la política social (y la articulación más débil entre tales políticas) después de 2008 tuvieron graves consecuencias. El aumento del empleo y la caída del desempleo fueron acompañados por el deterioro de las condiciones laborales y el aumento de los empleos precarios (con bajos salarios y menores garantías).L'article analyse les caractéristiques du système de protection sociale du Royaume-Uni et ses effets sur le marché du travail. Il a été le premier pays à subir les effets pervers du capitalisme non réglementé. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l'État providence a progressé dans la satisfaction des besoins sociaux de base. À partir des années 1970, le système de protection sociale a commencé à reculer. Ce revers a atteint son apogée après 2008, lorsque le pays a été frappé par une crise financière (et une crise migratoire) et a entamé les préparatifs de la sortie du projet d'intégration régionale européenne. L'analyse a montré que l'austérité de la politique économique et l'affaiblissement de la politique sociale (et l'articulation plus faible entre ces politiques) après 2008 ont eu de graves conséquences. A partir da década de 1970, o sistema de proteção social começou a retroceder. Esse retrocesso atingiu seu auge depois de 2008, quando o país foi atingido por uma crise financeira (e uma crise migratória) e iniciou os preparativos para a saída do projeto de integração regional europeu. A análise mostrou que a austeridade na política econômica e o enfraquecimento da política social (e a menor articulação entre tais políticas), depois de 2008, tiveram sérias consequências.
