The future of Brazilian trade unionism in a changing world of work

Resumo: The objective of this article is to point out issues that help to reflect on the need for a profound restructuring of the Brazilian trade union movement due to the multiple disruptive transformations that occur in the world of work. The argument is based on the observation that the analytical approaches produced in the academic world contribute to stimulate debates within the trade union movement. Some of these interpretations suggest that union leaders and advisors are challenged to respond to the multiple attacks against labour rights and, at the same time, need to reformulate the strategies of union organisation and struggle. The guidelines of a proposed trade union reform directed to face the diagnosed challenges are presented.

El argumento se basa en la observación de que los enfoques analíticos producidos en el mundo académico contribuyen a estimular los debates dentro del movimiento sindical. Algunas de estas interpretaciones sugieren que los líderes y asesores sindicales tienen el reto de responder a los múltiples ataques contra los derechos laborales y, al mismo tiempo, necesitan reformular las estrategias de organización y lucha sindical. Se presentan las directrices de una propuesta de reforma sindical dirigida a afrontar los retos diagnosticados.L'objectif de cet article est de souligner les questions qui aident à réfléchir sur la nécessité d'une restructuration profonde du mouvement syndical brésilien en raison des multiples transformations perturbatrices qui se produisent dans le monde du travail. L'argument repose sur le constat que les approches analytiques produites dans le monde académique contribuent à stimuler les débats au sein du mouvement syndical. Certaines de ces interprétations suggèrent que les dirigeants et les conseillers syndicaux sont mis au défi de répondre aux multiples attaques contre les droits du travail et doivent, dans le même temps, reformuler les stratégies d'organisation et de lutte syndicales. Les lignes directrices d'une proposition de réforme syndicale visant à faire face aux défis diagnostiqués sont présentées.O objetivo do artigo é pontuar questões que ajudem a refletir sobre a necessidade de uma profunda reestruturação do movimento sindical brasileiro em razão das múltiplas transformações disruptivas que ocorrem no mundo do trabalho. A argumentação parte da constatação de que as abordagens analíticas produzidas no mundo acadêmico contribuem para estimular debates no âmbito do movimento sindical. Algumas dessas interpretações sugerem que os dirigentes e assessores sindicais são desafiados a responder aos múltiplos ataques contra os direitos do trabalho e, ao mesmo tempo, precisam reformular as estratégias de organização e luta sindical.
