The capitalist city and the gentrification progress: the remodelation process in Anhangabau (1877-1917)

Resumo: This paper aims to discuss how the processes of urbanization underway in São Paulo at the turn of the 20th century may have been used to engender "gentrifying" discourses about specific central regions of the city - poor, with slums, prostitution and modest trade. In these regions, which constituted a fertile real estate field for the expansion and remodeling of the city, there was a moralizing preoccupation of the elite (especially regarding the issue of prostitution) and a city project spatially incompatible with the lower classes. Considering this spectrum, it was elected the Anhangabaú remodeling process, which began with the announcement of the construction of the first Viaduto do Chá (1877) and was completed with the works of Anhangabaú Park (1917).

XIX - XX podem ter sido utilizados para engendrar discursos “gentrificadores” sobre regiões centrais específicas da cidade – pobres, encortiçadas, de meretrício e comércio simples. Nessas regiões, que constituíam um campo imobiliário fértil para a expansão e remodelação da cidade, existia uma preocupação moralizante da elite (principalmente no que tange a questão do meretrício) e um projeto de cidade espacialmente incompatível com as camadas baixas.
