Resumo: The present work aims to reflect on the urban protection in context political and administrative of Rio de Janeiro, since 1980, when the democratization of the country, towards 2000, until 2000, marked by major events occurred sports and the distinction of an excerpt from the site of the city as a "cultural landscape", title awarded by UNESCO, in 2012. The objective is to evaluate the use of the instrument of urban protection of the city and its distribution by Rio de Janeiro, identifying the different motivations that led to the urban protection initiatives, as well as the related Political and Administrative impacts, which allowed the establishment of three chronological periods: 1984-2000; 2001-2008 and 2009-2017.

El objetivo es evaluar el uso del instrumento de protección urbana de la ciudad y su distribución por lugar de la ciudad, identificando las diferentes motivaciones que llevaron a las iniciativas de protección urbana, así como los impactos administrativos y políticos relacionados, que permitió el establecimiento de tres períodos cronológicos: 1984-2000; 2001-2008 y 2009-2017.O presente artigo tem por objetivo principal avaliar criticamente o viés da proteção urbana no contexto político-administrativo do Rio de Janeiro, desde a década de 1980, quando ocorreu a redemocratização do país, até os anos 2000, marcados por grandes eventos esportivos e a distinção de um trecho do sítio da cidade como “paisagem cultural da humanidade”, título concedido pela UNESCO, em 2012.
