“A SMALL MOUTH” ABOUT THE GREEN AREAS SYSTEMS OF RIBEIRÃO PRETO (1945-1955)

Between 1945 e 1955, Ribeirão Preto went through an inflection moment of its urban form. In the beginning of 20th century, beneath the influence of coffee economic complex, the city was composed by a landscape/scenery formed by mansions and squares in its center, and popular neighborhoods on its periphery. In the 1940s, however, Ribeirão Preto absorbs another industrial dynamics. Soon, its urban fabric receives new inflows and tensions, becoming object of a master plan elaborated by the urbanist José de Oliveira Reis. Against the social division that the county would acquire, Oliveira Reis proposed another city organization structured by a system of green areas. However, the proposal sets up a polarization in the City Council that ends up with threats and tips from the plotters of the city. At the end of this period, it is seen the aggravation of its urban growth slopes: poor north – territory of factories and popular dwellings; south rich – space of neighborhoods primarily residential.
