Suburbanization in Rio de Janeiro: Reflections of the Constructed Identity in the Configuration of Engenho Novo

Resumo: | This article aims to reflect about the role of the historical processes in the construction of suburban identities at the Metropolis of Rio de Janeiro, and the influence of urban configuration in the constitution of identities values in the carioca suburbs. It also intends to demonstrate how the carioca suburban concept differs from the geographical notion of suburb. It is based in the idea that to identify the dynamics formalized in the space it is necessary to interpret general and particular historical processes through visions and interactions in the macroscale; and to understand the effect of the spatial dimension in the urban dynamics, avoiding or promoting human actions. Thus it recovers historical moments of the metropolitan structure, revises the construction of the concept of carioca suburb carioca through time and analyse specificities of the process of constitution of a part of Engenho Novo, a pioneer suburb in Rio de Janeiro, observing how its identity is constructed. As conclusion, we evaluate the singularities of Engenho Novo as a place, besides its insertion in the whole of the carioca suburbs – commenting about solutions that historically and spatially distinguish it, and common traces that creates a unicity of the suburban identity. In this dialectic it is possible to observe a potentiality that can be reverted into a search for a better urban quality of life. This case study comprehends a research that investigate others suburban territories of the Metropolis of Rio de Janeiro. |

Este articulo propone reflejar acerca lo papel de los procesos históricos en la construcción de las identidades suburbanas en Metrópoli de Rio de Janeiro. Pretende también verificar la influencia de la configuración espacial, factor clave en la constitución de valores identitarios que permiten diferenciar los suburbios cariocas. Presenta la distinción de lo concepto de suburbio carioca relativo a la comprensión frecuentemente diseminada basada en una noción geográfica. Se guía pela idea de que para identificar dinámicas formalizadas en lo espacio es necesario interpretar procesos históricos generales e particulares a partir de visiones e interacciones en la macroescala; y por lo entendimiento de que la dimensión espacial influencia en las dinámicas urbanas impidiendo o promoviendo acciones humanas. Para eso recupera momentos históricos de la estructuración metropolitana, revisa la construcción del concepto de suburbio carioca en el tempo y analiza especificidades del proceso de constitución de un trecho de lo barrio de Engenho Novo, suburbio pionero en Río de Janeiro y puerta de entrada de la región suburbana. Concluí que Engenho Novo integra con singularidad la totalidad de los suburbios cariocas presentando soluciones históricamente diversas que establecen relaciones socioculturales únicas, más igualmente remiten a una misma condición identitária suburbana. En esta dialéctica se encuentra una potencia que puede ser revertida en pro de una busca por mejor calidad de vida urbana. El estudio de caso se inserte en una investigación sobre otros territorios suburbanos de la Metrópoli do Rio de Janeiro. O artigo visa refletir sobre o papel de processos históricos na construção de identidades suburbanas na Metrópole do Rio de Janeiro. Pretende também averiguar a influência da configuração espacial na constituição desses valores identitários que permitem diferenciar os subúrbios cariocas. Visa ainda mostrar a distinção do conceito de subúrbio carioca em relação à compreensão disseminada em países centrais baseada em uma noção geográfica. Norteia-se pela ideia de que para identificar dinâmicas formalizadas no espaço é necessário interpretar processos históricos gerais e particulares a partir de visões e interações na macroescala urbana; e pelo entendimento de que a dimensão espacial influencia nas dinâmicas urbanas impedindo ou promovendo ações humanas. Para isso recupera momentos históricos da estruturação metropolitana, revisa a construção do conceito de subúrbio carioca no tempo e analisa especificidades do processo de constituição de um trecho do bairro do Engenho Novo, subúrbio pioneiro na história do Rio de Janeiro e porta de entrada da região suburbana, observando seu rebatimento na construção de sua identidade. Avalia-se que o Engenho Novo é um lugar singular inserido em uma totalidade dos subúrbios cariocas. Apresenta soluções que caracterizam uma diversidade historicamente e espacialmente determinada a qual estabelece relações socioculturais únicas, mas através de traços comuns remete a uma mesma condição identitária suburbana. Nesta dialética encontra-se uma potência que pode ser revertida em prol de uma busca por uma melhor qualidade de vida urbana.
